FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Here you'll find answers to the questions Android phone and tablet owners ask most often: what this reference is, how to install games safely, what to do about suspicious requests, and how to protect yourself and your children from accidental purchases.

Most trouble with mobile games starts with a single step outside the store. The best protection is not to take that step.

About this reference

Is this the old site with Android games and apps?

No. This domain used to host a catalogue of Android games and apps. The current reference is not connected to it and does not continue it.

Where are the old files and pages?

They are not being restored. We do not distribute files or link to APKs. Look for the game you want in the official store.

Are you affiliated with Google or game developers?

No. This reference is independent. Check store policies and game terms in the official Google Play Help and with the developers.

Why don't you give games scores?

A score reflects the author's taste, while our aim is to help you make up your own mind. So we describe genres, formats and the signs worth looking at.

Installation and safety

Why shouldn't I install games from unknown sources?

Nobody checks files from unofficial sources: what looks like a game may be a malicious app. Besides, such versions don't receive updates from the store.

What is “Install unknown apps”?

It is a permission that lets a specific app, such as a browser or file manager, install other apps. Since Android 8.0 Oreo it is granted separately to each app. It is best left off unless you really need it.

What is Google Play Protect?

It is protection that Google introduced in 2017. It scans apps on your device. You shouldn't turn it off.

A game wants access to my contacts and messages. What should I do?

If the game doesn't need it to work, deny access. If the game won't start without it, it's better to uninstall it and look for another one.

Purchases and children

How can I avoid accidental purchases?

In the Google Play settings you can require purchases to be confirmed with a password or biometrics. Then no purchase can go through without you.

How do I set up a child's phone?

Use parental controls such as Google Family Link: they let you approve purchases and app installs and restrict content by age.

What does a game's age rating mean?

On Google Play it is assigned through the IARC system, and different countries show local ratings, such as PEGI in Europe. The rating describes the content, not the quality of the game.

How do I cancel a subscription in a game?

Subscriptions taken out through the store are managed in your store account. Deleting the game from your phone does not cancel the subscription.
